I’m sure you’ve seen the news: Our disgraced, twice-impeached former president Donald Trump has officially been indicted in New York, stemming from an investigation into potentially fraudulent payments he made to Stormy Daniels back in 2016. This is unprecedented — no president (not even Richard Nixon) has ever been indicted in the history of our country. And because of his total inability to operate within the bounds of the law, we all know that no one has earned the distinction of being the first quite like Donald Trump has.

We’ve officially entered the era of Donald Trump’s criminal accountability. Whatever happens with this indictment, the ground has shifted for Trump and those who would do anything to see him get re-elected. It’s not a matter of if Trump will face charges at this point, it’s a matter of when — and not just in this New York case. Trump is also under investigation by a Department of Justice special counsel and in Georgia for his now-infamous phone call demanding Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger “find 11,7800 votes” so he could steal the presidential election.

Trump’s response has been unhinged, because he knows his fate is in the legal system’s hands, and no longer with his MAGA sycophants in Congress. As activists, we worked for years to hold Trump accountable. Now, we must demand that Republicans answer for the leader of their party and the criminal charges that he’s facing.

Every Republican, including the 18 currently holding seats in congressional districts Biden won, has played a part in shielding Trump from the consequences of his crimes. They’ve advanced the corrupt and hateful agenda that he ran on, and turned a blind eye as he attempted to coerce our allies overseas into digging up dirt on his political rivals, spread conspiracy theories and misinformation to overturn the 2020 election, and incited a deadly riot at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. As I write this, these MAGA enablers are standing by supportively as their fellow Republicans in the House try to intimidate New York’s district attorney and protect Trump one more time.

Those Republicans who refuse to condemn Trump are nevertheless sending a clear message to their constituents and to the American people: They think Donald Trump is above the law. They simply don’t care what criminal activity he engages in as long as he takes back the White House in 2024. They do not care about our democracy and they do not care about the American people. They only care about power.

That’s why I’m so encouraged to be in this movement with all of you. I know that we won’t let that happen. Our movement started in response to Trump’s election and to the destructive ideology of the MAGA agenda, and through these last six years, we have never lost sight of our goal to defend our democracy from any attacks. We will hold Trump accountable in the courts and at the ballot box, and we’ll do it together.
