For the 1st time ever an impeachment trial will likely not include witnesses or evidence… or reason.

Late last night, the Senators’ question time in the impeachment trial concluded and we have bad news: the moment the questions were over, retiring Senator Lamar Alexander of Tennessee issued a statement that his defining legacy in the Senate will be to cave to Mitch McConnell and vote for a witness-free sham trial. For real, that’s how he wants to go out.

What that means: unless something really, really dramatic happens today (probably in the middle of the night because that’s Mitch’s favorite time of day to take a wrecking ball to our democracy), Senate Republicans will vote to acquit Trump without having heard from a single witness.

The raw partisanship and disloyalty to the core of our democratic values makes me want to tear my hair out. But the fact is, there’s not much more we can do on this vote — so it’s time to look at the next one (🗳).
