The fight for reproductive freedom begins anew today and Monday updates

Last week, in a highly anticipated yet still shocking decision, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in a ruling that immediately set back rights and personal freedoms in some parts of this country by 200 years.

Indivisibles all across the country marched this weekend in protest of this cruel opinion, which outright revokes bodily autonomy for people who can get pregnant. We organized. We made signs. We chanted. We convened in a show of solidarity — raising our voices in anger. We know that the majority of Americans support abortion access but MAGA Republicans (and the right-wing liars they call Supreme Court justices) are going against the overwhelming will of the people and our very bodies.

During their confirmation hearings, here’s a few things that justices who ruled to overturn Roe said:

  • Neil Gorsuch: “So a good judge will consider it as precedent of the U.S. Supreme Court worthy as treatment of precedent like any other.”
  • Brett Kavanaugh: “…important precedent of the Supreme Court that has been reaffirmed many times.”
  • Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr.: “…settled as a precedent of the court.”

When push came to shove, all of the conservative justices showed their true intentions. Clarence Thomas went as far as saying the court, “should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell,” in a brazen concurrent opinion charting a path to strip away access to contraception, protections for same-sex relationships, and same-sex marriage.

We all know MAGA Republicans lie. We hoped it wouldn’t infect the Supreme Court justices, even as we witnessed the underhanded techniques Republicans used to pack the court. We are now left with the reality that the Supreme Court does not protect the rights of the American people.

If you’re like us, you woke up today a little deflated. Once the initial wave of anger and indignation washed over us, we were left with the shock and depression of seeing our fundamental rights stripped away through nakedly partisan maneuvering to subvert the desires of the American public. We woke up trying to decide what comes next. How do we move forward?

These are our strategies, here are your weekly to-dos:

Your 5 weekly to-dos

  1. Donate to abortion funds. Local and national abortion networks are going to be pushed to the brink. Whether providing vital information in an increasingly more confusing landcape, access to mail-order abortion pills, or travel assistance to get to the nearest health care provider, abortion funds need our help to continue to operate. Click here to see a thread of local funds in states where trigger laws immediately went into effect. And if you want to split a donation nationally, click here to split a donation between 92 funds across the country.
  2. Click here for guidance on how to birddog your MAGA representatives over the July 4th recess. From the beginning, one of Indivisible’s most successful strategies has been birddogging. We show up, we ask the tough questions, we record the answers of our representatives, and we hold them accountable for their stances. During this recess, let’s get in front of our representatives and make them explain how they can support these atrocious rollbacks of American rights and their stances on future attacks on American freedoms.
  3. Click here to sign up for Give No Ground today. We know what MAGA Republicans are planning. Mitch McConnell has already signaled that if Republicans gain control of Congress, a national abortion ban is on the table. For both the short-term and long-term safety and security of bodily autonomy in this country, we must make sure this extremist right-wing does not gain control over our country. Sign up to Give No Ground to ensure that a Democratic majority prevails.
  4. Sign up to support court expansion at Four More. We’ve launched a new website about the need for court expansion with our partners at Stand Up America, Take Back the Court, and Demand Justice. We can’t let the Supreme Court steal anymore of our rights. Visit Four More to learn more about expansion and how to get involved.
  5. Click here to call your senator and demand they pass the Markey Court Expansion Bill. Even as Democrats work to expand our rights, the threat of them being overturned by the Supreme Court looms large. We must expand the court after Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell conspired to pack it for generations to come. The only way to re-legitimize the court is to expand it. Contact your senator and, when you’re done, click here to contact your representative and tell them to pass Rep. Mondaire Jones’ House version of the bill.

The work of defending democracy continues with your help. In order to keep Give No Ground running and to fund all of the work we do here at Indivisible, click here to donate today.

National Events

Click here to register for the Deep Canvass Phonebank for Western Candidates (Mike Levin, Mark Kelly, Jamie Mcleod-Skinner, and Katie Porter) on Thursday, July 7 at 8pm ET/5pm PT. Deep canvassing is a proven method for persuading and moving voters to action even across ideological differences. At this event, you’ll receive a 1hr training and then get to do some phonebanking for the Give No Ground candidate of your choosing. We will specifically focus on abortion as a central issue to the campaign at this event. So, come learn how to effect change in the abortion debate while ensuring a Democratic majority in November.

IndivisiWin of the Week

This last week was one of the most potentially demoralizing in recent memory. We never thought we’d live to see the day where Roe was repealed, but here we are. We have two choices — let this defeat us and give in to the rise of fascism or organize with a renewed vigor and fight tooth and nail for all of the American people, not just a few. We know which choice Indivisibles will make and we’re ready to continue this fight with you.
